Cologne in French times

On October the sixth 1794 the French army gloriously conquered Cologne. Well,
actually the people of Cologne didn't put up a fight, they knew they did not stand
a chance. Luckily they didn't!

Being one of the biggest and most important cities of Europe in the middle ages,
Cologne had become an oldfashioned and backward place in early modern times.
Now came the french kicking Cologne somewhat screaming into the enlightened
19th century. The almost impenetrable medieval guild-system was done away
with. Real hospitals were build. The streets became clean and bright by night.
Equal rights were established. But bootleggers and highwaymen gave the new
police-force a lot of work to do. Do follow us on our search for traces of the French
in todays Cologne.
